Choi Byung-il, a trade expert and professor emeritus at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, said the deal was the “bare minimum that we can accept as a competitor of Japan and Germany in the US market”. He added that South Korea’s free trade deal with the US had been rendered “meaningless”. Choi said that the “good news for Korea is that it got assurance from the US that it will get similar treatment to Japan and the EU for imminent US tariffs on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals”. But he cautioned that, while the tariff agreement had “put out the most urgent fire”, negotiations between Trump and Lee on defence and security issues “will be much tougher”.
