옥용식 교수는UN 지속가능개발목표 (SDGs) 분야의 세계적인 석학으로 미국 테일러앤프란시스 사와 환경사회지배구조 (ESG)를 전문으로 다루는 국제학술지 “Sustainable Environment”을 발간, 초대 편집위원장을 역임하고 있으며, 환경공학 분야 118종 학술지 중 1, 2위 (2019년 CiteScore 기준) 학술지의 총괄편집위원장을 모두 역임한 최초의 학자이다.
미국 스탠포드대학교 William Mitch 교수와 환태평양대학협회 프로그램 총괄책임자를 역임, 전세계 글로벌 기업, 국제기구 및 연구기관과 ESG 환경기술 및 정책개발 연구를 선도하고 있다. 2019년 한국인 최초로 환경생태 분야에서 “세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 연구자 (Highly Cited Researcher)”에 선정된 후 현재까지 대한민국 학자 중 가장 많은 고인용논문 (HCP)을 보유하고 있다. 특히, 2021년에는 환경생태 및 공학 두 개 분야에서 한국인 최초로 HCR에 선정되었다. 2020년, 2021년, 2022년 고려대학교 석탑연구상 (2020년 생명과학대학 단독 수상) 및 2022년 제1회 석탑국제협력상을 동시 수상하였다. 한국과학기술단체총연합회 제 20회, 제 23회, 제 26회 과학기술우수논문상을 수상하였으며, 환경부장관 표창 (2012년), 과학기술정보통신부장관 표창 (2019년), 부총리 겸 교육부장관 표창 (2022년) 등을 수상하였다.
국내대학 최초로 네이처 컨퍼런스 한국에 유치에 성공, 2021년 10월 네이처 3대 저널 편집위원장과 함께 대회장 자격으로 지속가능한 미래를 위한 네이처 컨퍼런스를 성황리에 개최하였고, 2021년 3월부터 MIT, 스탠포드대, 뮌헨공대, ETH, 코넬대학교 등 세계 최고 대학의 석학들과 글로벌기업의 ESG 평가를 위한 글로벌렉처시리즈를 출범, 한국공학교육학회 ESG 연구회, 한국환경생물학회 ESG 산학연 위원회 등을 창설, 국내 주요 대학, 기업, 정부기관 등과 ESG를 전문적으로 연구하는 융합 포럼을 기획하였고, 2022년 3월부터 매주 환태평양대학 61개 대학 2백만 이상의 회원을 대상으로 ESG에 대한 강의를 진행하고 있다. 2022년 고려대학교 경영대학에서 "비지니스와 환경"을 주제로 MBA 강의를 개설하였고, 고려대학교 경영전문대학원 ESG 최고경영자과정, UPES 경영대학원 (외래교수) 등에서 환경 분야에 특화된 ESG 강의와 기업 자문을 진행하고 있다.

Dr. Ok is a full professor and global research director of Korea University, Seoul, Korea. He has published over 900 research papers and books, 102 of which have been ranked as Web of Science ESI top papers (100 have been selected as “Highly Cited Papers” (HCPs), and two as “Hot Papers”). He has been a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher (HCR) since 2018 in Cross Field, Environment and Ecology, and Engineering. In 2019, he became the first Korean to be selected as an HCR in the field of Environment and Ecology. Again in 2021, he became the first Korean HCR in two fields: Environment and Ecology, and Engineering. He is working at the vanguard of global efforts to develop sustainable waste management strategies and technologies to address the rising crisis in electronic and plastic waste, and pollution of soil and air with particulate matter. Dr. Ok has also served in a number of positions worldwide including, as an honorary professor at the University of Queensland (Australia), a visiting professor at Tsinghua University (China), an adjunct professor at the University of Wuppertal (Germany), and a guest professor at Ghent University (Belgium). He maintains a worldwide professional network by serving as a Co-Editor-in-Chief of Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology, an Editor of Environmental Pollution, a member of the editorial advisory board of Environmental Science & Technology, and an editorial board member of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Chemical Engineering Journal, and Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology, and several other top journals. He currently serves as the Director of the Sustainable Waste Management Program for the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the Co-President of the International ESG Association. Moreover, he has served on the Scientific Organizing Committee of P4G Nature Forum: Climate Change and Biodiversity, and Nature Forum: Plastics and Sustainability. Dr. Ok has also served as the chairman of numerous major conferences such as Engineering Sustainable Development series (ESD series), organized by the APRU and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). In 2021, Dr. Ok hosted the first Nature conference among South Korean universities in Seoul on waste management and valorization for a sustainable future together with Chief Editors of Nature Sustainability (Dr. Monica Contestabile), Nature Electronics (Dr. Owain Vaughan), and Nature Nanotechnology (Dr. Fabio Pulizzi). Prof. Ok will host the first Nature Forum on Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) for Global Sustainability: the “E” Pillar for Sustainable Business.
