[Seminar] Dialogue with SONG Sang-Hyun (IIC)

SONG Sang-Hyun, President of the International Criminal Court (IIC), has been invited by the Seoul Forum of International Affairs and will be offering a Seoul Forum Member Dialogue at the Seoul Club on September 30.


The following is a brief summary of official activities of Judge Sang-Hyun Song from 16 July to 8 August, 2014.

On 17 July President Song delivered speeches at two events in New York marking the Day of International Criminal Justice. First, he spoke at a seminar to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Relationship Agreement between the UN and the ICC, with the participation of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.  Second, President Song also took part in a panel discussion focused on the Kampala Amendments on the crime of aggression.

President Song met with the Paraguayan Minister of Justice Sheila Abed, after a brief courtesy call to Mr. Cartes, President of the Republic on 26 July. During the meeting, both reconfirmed mutual support and cooperation.

President Song participated in the Opening Ceremony of the XVIII. Ibero-American Judicial Summit on 4 August in Montevideo, Uruguay, speaking alongside the President of the Supreme Court of Uruguay, Jorge Larrieux.

Subsequently, President Song signed an Exchange of Letters between The ICC and The Parliament of MERCOSUR (PARLASUR) with its President, Rubén Martínez Huelmo, in Montevideo, establishing a Framework Cooperation Arrangement between the two organisations.

There was a meeting between President Song and the Foreign Minister of Uruguay, Luis Almagro, where President Song highlighted Uruguay’s exemplary support for the ICC since its beginning. The meeting continued over a luncheon hosted by the Minister in honor of President Song. After lunch President Song was received by the President of Uruguay, José Mujica, who pledged continued support for the ICC which he considered to be a very important institution in what should be a global aspiration to overcome mass violence.

President Song gave a two day presentation at the “41st Course in International Law” organized by the Organisation of American States (OAS), on 5-6 August, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

President Song had a meeting with the Inter-American Juridical Committee of the OAS, on 7 August in Rio de Janeiro. He addressed Chairman Joao Clemente Baena Soares and underlined the organisations’ shared commitment to the development of and respect for the international rule of law, as expressed in the 2011 Framework Cooperation Agreement between the ICC and OAS.
